In endoscopic gynecology, laparoscopy was developed first as a diagnostic tool and later as an efficacious surgical technique. The therapeutic uses and complications of laparoscopy have been reported since 1970s. As operative laparoscopy becomes more widely accepted, the complication rate have been to rise. But the complication rate associated with operative laparoscopy is difficult to assess because there have been no national surveys. The main complications of laparoscopy are hemorrhage and perforations of bladder and bowel, therefore laparoscopists are aware of potential serious complications, such as vascular injuries, bowel perforations, urinary injuries, even if laparoscopy is a relatively sare procedure. Understanding these complications and how to assess them is the only way to minimize the rate of complications. Prompt recognition and treatment of compications will result in most favorable outcome for the patients.
